Mrs. Georgia Places in Top Five in National Competition
(Las Vegas, Nevada) Sherri Goggin, Mrs. Georgia 2006, was named third runner-up in the 2006 Mrs. United States Pageant held Tuesday, July 25 through Thursday, July 27 in Las Vegas. Mrs. Goggin, a resident of Athens, Georgia, was crowned Mrs. Georgia in February.
"I am so honored to be in the company of so many accomplished ladies," Mrs. Goggin said. "Every representative has an amazing story and was incredibly passionate about pursuing and advocating for her platform."
Recognized as "the premier event of its kind" and the largest pageant system available to married women, the Mrs. United States Pageant features contestants from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The purpose of the Mrs. United States Pageant is to honor and pay tribute to the married woman. The pageant system is designed to nationally recognize and reward the intelligence, success, strength, beauty and resilience of married women from every state and territory of the United States.
Beginning Tuesday night, Mrs. Goggin participated in a four-minute individual interview with a panel of five judges. The competition continued Wednesday as all 54 contestants joined in the preliminary state costume, swimwear and evening gown competitions.
Mrs. Goggin's state costume of a black and gold sequined leotard and train, gold coin belt and black and gold feather headdress represented the golden dome of the state capitol in Atlanta and the site of the country"s first gold rush in Dahlonega, Georgia.
"The Las Vegas-style costume portion of the competition is designed to highlight each contestant's personality and pride in our state by representing an aspect that we find important," Mrs. Goggin said.
The competition concluded on Thursday evening as each contestant returned to the stage modeling their state costume once again and performed a choreographed dance routine in red cocktail dresses. The performance was followed by the announcement of the top ten finalists. A swimsuit and evening gown competition preceded an individual, on-stage question which further narrowed the field to the top five winners including, Mrs. Georgia as the third runner-up.
Although she did not win the title, Mrs. Goggin plans to continue her work as Mrs. Georgia 2006. Having given birth to four premature babies and suffering the loss of her first born son only seven hours after birth, Mrs. Goggin passionately supports the March of Dimes, an organization which aims to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality through research, community services, education and advocacy.
Mrs. Goggin's efforts to help the March of Dimes include visiting Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) throughout the state and delivering a "bundle of joy" to each premature baby she visits. These "bundles of joy" are gift bags that contain a handmade fleece baby blanket, journal, bible devotional, photo album, and teddy bear prepared by volunteers from First United Methodist Church in Athens with help from the March of Dimes. She also has plans to publish the journal she kept during the four months she spent with her premature daughter, Kate, in the NICU at the Medical College of Georgia.
Mrs. Goggin and her husband, Tom, have also participated in the March of Dimes' annual Walk America campaign, leading their own "Preemie Teamie" and raising more than $10,000 since 2001. The Goggin family was selected as a March of Dimes Ambassador Family in 1999 and will be the featured family for the 2007 Walk America promotional video.
